What’s a personal mantra or philosophy you live by?

I’ve said “it is what it is” more times than I can count.

Sometimes because I genuinely accepted there was nothing more I could do. Other times, if I’m being honest, because I was tired. Tired of trying to understand why things happened the way they did. Tired of wishing things had turned out differently.

When life doesn’t go the way I hoped, those four words can feel comforting.

It is what it is.

For a moment, they let me put down the disappointment and breathe.

I remember having moments when I felt like I was putting effort into something and getting nowhere. I had made plans, had expectations and thought I knew how things would unfold. When it didn’t, it was tempting to simply shrug and tell myself, “well, it is what it is.”

And maybe, at the time, I needed that acceptance.

But there have also been times when I’ve wondered if accepting something meant I had to stop hoping for something better.

And that thought never quite sat right with me.

Because maybe acceptance isn’t about saying, “This is my life now.”

Maybe it’s simply saying, “This is where I am right now.”

There’s a difference.

I can acknowledge that something hurts without believing I’ll always hurt.

I can accept a plan didn’t work without deciding I’ll never succeed.

I can admit that I’m not where I want to be without convincing myself that I’m stuck there.

And honestly, I find something hopeful in that.

Because life changes. We change.

Sometimes slowly. Sometimes unexpectedly. Sometimes because we finally decide that we’re ready to do something differently.

So yes, maybe it is what it is today.

But today isn’t forever.

It also isn’t where my story ends.

And that’s the reminder I want to carry with me:

It is what it is. But it doesn’t have to stay that way.
