There is a fine line between being good and being great.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, good can describe something of high quality, while great suggests something remarkable in quality, degree, effectiveness, or impact.
In simple terms, being good is commendable, but being great takes things a step further.
It is good to be good, but why stop there when you can strive to be great?
Sometimes, we get so comfortable being good at what we do that we forget there’s room to become even better.
Think about it. When you want something done, do you simply look for someone who can get the job done, or do you look for someone who can do it exceptionally well?
Let me give you an example.
Suppose I want to make a dress and ask you to recommend a tailor. I’m sure you know at least one person you would confidently recommend without thinking twice and I’m willing to bet that you’ll refer me to a great tailor rather than just a good one.
Not necessarily because the good tailor cannot make beautiful clothes, but because the great tailor has something extra. Perhaps it’s the finishing, the packaging, the attention to the tiniest details, or the ability to turn an ordinary design into something remarkable.
Both tailors may be skilled, but one has consistently given people a reason to expect more.
Sometimes, the difference isn’t in the job itself but in HOW the job is done.
And that difference matters.
A good tailor may be able to make a beautiful dress, but a great tailor strives to make you love the dress, appreciate the experience, and remember the work long after you’ve worn it.
The same principle applies to almost every area of life.
There are good makeup artists, good singers, good actors and actresses, good bloggers, good engineers, good doctors, good lawyers, and so many others. But within these same professions, there are people who have distinguished themselves through excellence, consistency, creativity, and attention to detail.
The question, therefore, is not simply whether you are good at what you do.
The real question is: what are you doing to become better?
Are you willing to learn something new? Are you paying attention to the little things others overlook? Are you open to constructive criticism? Are you willing to step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself to grow?
Because greatness doesn’t happen by accident. It is often the result of deliberate effort, continuous learning, consistency, and the willingness to keep improving even when nobody is watching.
And please, don’t mistake being comfortable with being fulfilled. There is nothing wrong with celebrating how far you’ve come, but don’t let that celebration convince you that there is nothing more to learn or achieve.
Wherever you find yourself, whatever profession you belong to, and whatever stage of life you’re in, keep pushing yourself to grow.
You don’t have to be the best in the world overnight. You simply have to be willing to become better than you were yesterday.
Don’t just aim to be someone who can get the job done. Strive to be someone whose work speaks for itself. Someone who brings value, pays attention to detail, and makes a meaningful difference.
Be good at what you do. Be intentional about getting better. And dare to become great.
Till next time, be great, do great!
