What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?
If anyone was to ask me the one thing I own that holds deep sentimental value, I’d say nothing.
Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate beautiful and thoughtful gifts and I appreciate the efforts people put into making others feel special but I’ve never attached too much importance to material possessions. I can appreciate something today and let it go tomorrow without feeling like I lost a part of myself because for me, it’s more about the memories than the object itself.
I can lose a gift and still remember the person who gave it to me and I can let go of something I’ve owned for years without feeling like I’m letting go of the memories attached it because those things may be gone but the memories still linger.
Besides, life happens. Things get lost, damaged, replaced or outgrown and as much as we may try to preserve certain moments, we cannot keep everything forever. So, perhaps sentimental value doesn’t always have to be attached to something we own. It could be a memory we remember years later, a song that takes us to a particular season or a smell that reminds us of home and even though these things may not be on a shelf, they stay with us in their own way.
So, while I may not have a particular possession that I’d struggle to part with, I enjoy what I have, appreciate the people behind thoughtful gestures and understand that not everything is meant to stay forever.

Maybe just memories; Has anyone had the depressing duty to empty grandparents’ house of 75 years filled with items of sentimental value? You’d swear not to cling to things as ‘sentimental value’. What one thinks is sentimentally precious, some other person- once you’re gone- finds it meaningless. http://www.deetezellimountainstories.wordpress.com
